Repast II – Interactive XR Installation (outdoor)
Reimagining Repast I for the South African landscape.
Repast II is an adaptation of its predecessor, using the same digital art assets, digital film, and sound. Redesigned as an open-air installation, centering on the eucalyptus tree, an invasive species present both in Australia, where the work was created and filmed, and in South Africa, where it was exhibited. Repast II is an exploration of ecological entanglement, memory and place.
A custom hand-shaped touch capacitor, inspired by the inner workings of a tree, allows participants to trigger cinematic sequences from a moody Australian landscape filmed on location in South Australia onto a screen and a linen sheet, while digital art overlays are projected via projection mapping onto the surrounding eucalyptus trees to extend the boundaries between physical and virtual space.
