Ricochet – Kinaesthetic Empathy in String Quartet Performance
Exploring movement, gesture, and audience perception.
Commissioned by Flinders Quartet as part of their Ascend Commissioning Program 2024, Ricochet focuses on kinaesthetic empathy at an intimate scale. The work is rooted in physical movement, both metaphorically and literally where the ricochet bowing technique propels sound in unpredictable trajectories, creating a visceral connection between performers and audience.
Unlike Qualifying, which expresses energy through narrative, Ricochet places the listener in close proximity to the physical act of playing. The immediacy of movement and gesture creates a direct sensory engagement, immersing the audience in the raw, tactile energy of the performance.
