Qualifying: An Orchestral Experiment

Translating the precision and propulsion of Formula 1 into orchestration.

Qualifying investigates how immersion can be catalyzed through orchestration and narrative, using structure, spatialization, and dynamic contrast to evoke velocity, tension, and control. Commissioned by the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the work draws inspiration from Formula 1’s relentless pursuit of precision and innovation.

Structured like a qualifying session, the composition unfolds in three sections—anticipation, maneuvering, and propulsion—mirroring the intensity of a race. Brass fanfares simulate the revving grid, staggered motifs mimic overtaking maneuvers, and sweeping glissandi evoke aerodynamic flow. The orchestration employs spatialized techniques through antiphony, rhythm and attack to mimic propulsion and velocity, and harmonic tension to engage the listener, immersing them in the drama of competition without technological augmentation.

By demonstrating how orchestral writing alone can generate the spatial and emotional impact typically associated with immersive technologies, Qualifying explores the power of narrative and sonic design in creating deep engagement.
